Why Good is the Enemy of the Great

QCp6rFQl_400x400

It’s Sunday and we have a treat for you… Michelle Brailsford has been slaving over a Mac to bring you this quick video. This video is especially useful if you work in a corporation as Michelle has a Masters in Organizational behavior and 25 years experience as a corporate coach. Michelle has extolled the benefits of strengths for years. After embarking on a study of Positive Psychology and the Science of Happiness, Michelle is more convinced than ever that we’ve got the wrong mind set about development. We shouldn’t be worried about our weaknesses. We shouldn’t be trying to close competence gaps. Development plans shouldn’t focus on what needs to be fixed. The bottom line? We shouldn’t be trying to do more of what we’re “good” at.

Good Isn’t Great

If we’re striving to be great, our development plans should focus on our strengths and our hidden strengths or undiscovered potential. We’re at our personal best when leveraging our Strengths. Strengths are a set of authentic, pre-existing gifts; you’re energised when you’re using them and you get great results too. If you commit to just one thing in 2016, ensure that it is doing more of what you are great at! Bring your unique gifts & talents to more situations and use them to collaborate with more people and just see how your satisfaction and success levels soar!

Stop Self-Sabotaging Your Business

Do You Remember When You Hit The Wall?

Allan Kleynhans

We have just been watching this quick video from Allan Kleynhans about how he self-sabotaged his own multi-million business.

If you have ever tried to do anything worthwhile then you will have hit some adversity. They say that the bigger the goal the bigger the challenges will become. How did you get through it?

If you were lucky there was a person or a few people who were a vital support to you at that time? How does it feel to remember the support you received? Super grateful? Maybe you gained new knowledge or simply emotional support and growth but probably both.

Failure is the fastest way to learn. Learn to love failing faster.

If you commit to being bold and therefore failing faster, make absolutely sure that you have the right sort of exemplar peer group who will catch and support you forward.

Make sure you watch Allan’s video all the way to the end (7.55 mins) because he has a great tip for creating energy in your body that will speed you further forward.

It’s About Time – The Power of Systems-Based Time Management

9892286Time management has long been a topic of busy people, including leaders and managers. In particular, most want to know how to get more done while working on the most important issues. Often efforts to manage time fall short and we find ourselves falling back into old patterns with less than optimal results. It’s time to crack the code on good time management.

Be Systematic!

It’s been proven that approximately 94% of the results we experience at work and at home are a function of the systems in which we live and work, not our individual efforts. If we want to manage time better, we have to change our systems. In addition, we usually find that 20% of the things we do produce 80% of the results we experience, both good and not so good. Finally, we find that sequencing is critical to the results we experience. If we get things in the right sequence, everything moves faster and easier with few backtracks. Here we have the three most important tenets for superior and sustainable time management:

  1. A Systems-Based Approach

  2. Working Only on the Critical 20%

  3. Getting Things in Proper Sequence

In creating your optimally effective and sustainable time management system, make these three tenets the centerpieces of your system.

Systems Based Conscious Leadership

Those of you who know and have worked with me are well aware of my belief in Systems Based Organizational Health. What is Organizational Health? A healthy organization is whole, consistent and complete – management, operations, strategy, and culture fit together. Why should we care? As Patrick Lencioni states in The Advantage, “Organizational Health will one day surpass all other disciplines in business as the greatest opportunity for improvement and competitive advantage.”

2015-07-10_12-20-54-207x300Driven by passion for systems based organizational health, I can almost always be found reading articles and books related to the subject. In one of my learning quests, I came across the book, The New Agreements in the Workplace, written by David Dibble. In reading it, I found that most of it aligned with my thinking. After a few conversations and a LinkedIn connection with David Dibble, I was offered a seat in The Four New Agreements for Leaders & Managers workshop held in San Diego.

The Four New Agreements for Leaders & Managers workshop was certainly a good investment of my time. In fact, I would like to share some of the key points with you.

2015-06-10-15.22.57-300x169Point #1: Nothing happens in isolation. In business, if there is stress anywhere in the system, it is passed on to the people. Think about it in a practical sense. If your manufacturing line has an issue, it will affect and stress every other area of your business in some way. Sales people have difficulty selling a sub-par or untimely product, which affects their sales, which in turn, affects their attitude. An employee’s attitude affects the customer’s response to the product/service/company. This affects the capability of the business to make profits, which may lead to cutbacks or even layoffs. And, on it goes for all of the functions/systems, which are all in some way connected to manufacturing.

Point #2: Stress in the system will cause stress in the people. This can be seen in the countless studies that reveal the state of the American workplace when it comes to engagement. The Gallup report, “State of the American Workplace”, (http://www.gallup.com/services/178514/state-american-workplace.aspx) published in 2013 reveals that in 2012 only 30% of Americans were actively engaged in their jobs, a more than 2:1 ratio of the unengaged vs. those who have found meaning in their work.

Point #3: 94% of what’s wrong in the workplace is in the systems – not the people. A very important point to remember as many companies will replace their people, only to find that the issues persist or even deteriorate.

Now for the big question. What do we do about it? This was the key to the workshop. While companies like Dynamic Interactions (www.dynamicinteractions.net) and Dibble LEADERS (http://www.4newagreements4leaders.com/) can act as consultants and guide clients through the process of identifying and fixing what is broken in the systems, this workshop can provide a roadmap for those business leaders who want to start the process internally. Not only were key points identified in the workshop but most importantly, solutions were presented. And, the solutions were presented in a practical, real-world, easy to apply methodology.

I would like to see this workshop offered all over the country and specifically in my home city of Houston. For more information about future workshops and to download your own copy of The New Agreements in the Workplace, visit: http://www.4newagreements4leaders.com/.

“The time has come for fundamental change in the way we lead and manage in the workplace. The old, fear-driven, non-systems based models to which we have become accustomed are basically obsolete in today’s workplace. Dibble LEADERS and The Four New Agreements for Leaders and Managers have proven to be a comprehensive and highly productive new model to which conscious leaders will aspire–and prosper–as never before.”
 —David Dibble

The Power of Conscious Capitalism and Systems Thinking

I’m a big fan of Conscious Capitalism (CC). We’ve been teaching CC principles for many years, even prior to the publishing of the must read book, Conscious Capitalism, by John Mackey and Raj Sisodia.

2741738In an insightful article describing a recent CC meeting we both attended, Bhavna Chadalavada describes the high points of a presentation given by Conscious Leader Ash Patel, CEO of Commercial Bank of California. This man is, in my opinion, both a great and conscious leader. The results he and his team are creating are in line with other CC companies, 10.5 times the performance of non-CC companies over 15 years. However, it appears CC may be missing a proven strategy for becoming a Conscious Leader or a CC company.

Two Critical Pieces

Two areas stand out that may significantly hinder CC becoming a movement that transforms the business landscape globally: 1) A lack of systems thinking and 2) A lack of a robust/structured implementation strategy. Let me explain.

The Workplace Operates Like The Universe

The physical universe is made of systems and subsystems from the largest features such as clusters of galaxies to the quantum realm of subatomic particles. In nature, these systems are responsible for 100% of the results created. However, when the human mind gets involved, such as in the workplace, approximately 94% of results, both good and poor, is a function of the systems in which people work, not the efforts of those people. Yet, leaders and managers are “trained” to focus on people as the source of problems, solutions and performance.

Reams of data indicate this focus on the wrong issues is a huge contributor to ineffective leadership and management and poor performance. If we want to implement CC, set up people to be successful, create huge value for all stakeholders and etc., we must optimize our systems. While Conscious Leadership will take us part of the way there, a lack of systems thinking and systems optimization could easily turn a CC implementation into a “flavor of the month.”

Implementation of Conscious Capitalism is Critical

Leaders, including the vast majority of those who will be pulled to CC, are not systems thinkers. While it’s possible to create good or even great companies without systems thinking, they are rare and difficult to sustain. Most of “great” companies described in business classics such as In Search of Excellence and Good to Great have fallen on hard times. Meanwhile, systems-based companies such as Toyota and Honda not only dramatically outperform their competitors, they go on and on despite changes in leadership.

It appears, if CC added these systems thinking/systems optimization pieces to its Four Tenets, successful implementation, performance and sustainability of CC companies will increase dramatically. Based upon case studies over now more than 25 years, we can move beyond even the current lofty performance of existing CC companies.

CC is an idea whose time has come. Systems principles have been with us since the beginning of time. Systems thinking is straightforward, if properly taught. Together, we make a powerful potion that will not only change the workplace in profound ways, but our world, too.

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW

THAT’S HURTING YOUR BUSINESS.

IT’S WHAT YOU KNOW THAT ISN’T SO!

Leadership and management in the workplace are clearly no longer working—at least not well.

  • We now find ourselves with 70% of US employees disengaged from work.
  • We seem to have no idea how to lead and manage the Millennials, young people who will soon make up more than 50% of the workforce.
  • It’s also becoming more and more difficult for most businesses to maintain profitability and growth rates.

These and other seemingly intractable issues in the workplace are a direct result of legacy leadership and management models, which in many cases, have clearly outlived their usefulness.

We can’t solve our problems with the same level of consciousness used to create them.” –Albert Einstein

Based upon Nobel Prize winning science, the Four New Agreements model will open your eyes to a whole new way of being in the workplace.

Chunks and Bits

Chunks and Bits

Emerging Trends in Training

By Robert N. L. Browning

Did you ever wonder after enduring a long weekend or week of so called “traditional training” if there is a better way?

These marathons of old school legacy instruction usually leave me feeling numb and wondering if it was worth the effort. In a sense, they remind me of my experience in military boot camp where I was broken down while being laboriously educated at the same time.

This type of learning event tends to cram your mind with a massive data overload with minimum consideration to how human’s best learn, with little attention to basic human needs. In the past, I have dutifully taken the huge binder they tend to give you and all my voluminous notes and I put it on a shelf with the best of intentions. My retention seems to quickly fade and browsing a thick binder for answers is arduous at best. I guess you can say I’m generally not a big fan of this approach when over done.

I admit that well run live seminars still have their place. It does address different learning styles and can mix in today’s more advanced methods and tools. It is important to note that personal interaction does tend to enhance greater connection. Live video also positively contributes to engagement. This can work well when a blending of on going well executed digital asset management and on line learning.

What is working for you?

How does this of type of training event work for you? How is your retention and access to answers when you need them?

These mass production factory learning methods are certainly highly debatable and outdated. In particular in light the growing body of contemporary learning and mind research. The creative use of newly available advanced technology makes it possible to now effectively train in “bite-size” pieces securely anytime, anywhere on any device.

Learning and Training as a subject can get a bit academic. The bottom line is what really works for you? Many current findings point to transcendence of much of the legacy training approach that has dominated the last few hundred years of education as a whole.

Don’t get me wrong, the art of the spoken word still has a special place. A brilliant keynote address or masterful trainer still has much to contribute to an event or longer format training audio or video. That said, in today’s fast moving world there is an important place for making it simple and easy to get the knowledge and answers you need in the context of your work day.

Is the Future of Learning Bite-Sized?

A strong case has been made for the effectiveness and convenience of smaller chucks of learning and development. An e-magazine called Chief Learning Officer, which focuses on solutions for enterprise productivity, explores in a poignant article “Is the Future of Learning Bite-Sized?” They shared the following: “Three trends are driving big changes in the learning and development industry, and these are miniaturization, modularization and mass customization.” The article goes on to say, “This shift has repercussions for learning and development functions. Previously, a one- or two-day program would have been acceptable. Now the market is consistently seeking shorter and sharper experiences with immediate practical application.”

In the past, I organically just felt it was natural for me to embrace the idea of “Inch by inch it’s a cinch” or “how do eat an elephant, one bite at a time”. This is not a new idea yet old educational systems seem to stubbornly exert their influence. In the Tao it is said “.A tower nine stories high begins with a heap of earth”, and “A Journey of a thousand leagues start from where your feet stand”. These simple lessons and ideas in education helped me overcome the limits of traditional learning methods and to transcend humble beginnings.

Improve E-Learning with Chunks and Bits

In an article from Articulate.com about “Improve E-Learning with Chunks and Bits” they share tips for making learning more manageable. They make the point that “Instead of just dumping information on the learner, you have an opportunity to guide the learner by structuring your content by how our brains process information.” One of three things that have to happen is “Organizing Content into Small Chunks”. They go on to say “Structure the new information in small, related chunks so that it is optimized for working memory. Don’t overload the working memory with irrelevant content. The brain is sorting and organizing the information. If it’s not relevant, or there’s too much of it, it interferes with the learning process.”

I’m passionate about the subject of learning and being able to give people what they need, when they need it to be more effective and successful in the workplace. Adapting to the changing landscape of the current business environment is giving people more effective bite-size training.

Four Trends in Online Training & e-Learning

In an article on “4 Trends in Online Training & e-Learning in 2012” by Jessica Athey, she focuses on “Mobile Applications, Gamification, Social Collaboration and Bite-Size e-Learning”. Jessica goes on to say regarding bite size learning ”In this ‘information now’ era where access to information is conveniently at our fingertips at any given time, learners do not typically want to delve into text-heavy or time-consuming e-learning content; Learners want quick, bite-size pieces of information. It is much easier to progress through a course in smaller chunks and much easier to retain information when we can process and reflect on information in small sections. A bite-sized course structure is ideal for mobile delivery, as many learners access information while waiting for an appointment, while on a break or in other short spurts of time.”

Recent developments in technology have now made it possible to better tap the potential of these practical and effective advanced learning concepts related to chunks and bits. That intersection of opportunity includes greater band width, a host of access devices, greater collaboration, and advanced video, with new platforms far more effectively managing digital assets than ever before. When companies such as Success Solutions International, Visilink Media, and KESocial.com apply these engaging learning technologies and methods restraints are lifted and training potential performance is increased. This is truly a monumental time for the merging of creativity, training, and technology.

Are Six Sigma, Lean, and Lean Sigma Obsolete in Western Companies

– Part 1

Are Six Sigma, Lean, and Lean Sigma Obsolete in Western Companies - Part I

I am clear this article will raise the hackles of many systems improvement advocates, trainers and consultants. It will probably do the same for some leaders in business who have a difficult time looking in the mirror when things go wrong. However, we must admit that doing the same thing over and over getting the same poor result must be telling us something most prefer not to hear.

Quality improvement programs, like opinions, everyone has one. Okay, not every company has a quality improvement program. But for the tens of thousands of companies that do, the program is probably monikered as Six Sigma, Lean, Lean Sigma or some variation thereof. Where did these programs come from and why are they under-performing or simply failing?

A Little History

W. Edwards Deming is thought to be the foremost pioneer and number one guru of the quality movement, which started with his work in Japan in the 1950s. Deming’s book, Out of the Crisis along with Joe Juran’s The Quality Handbook appear to be the seminal text’s on quality/systems improvement in the early days. Later, quality/systems ideas morphed into Total Quality Management (TQM) which begot Toyota, Six Sigma, Lean, Lean Sigma and etc. All of these programs are designed to improve systems/processes thereby improving quality while reducing cost.

While the methodologies used in these programs is much the same as the successful ones used in Japan, the results, in general, cannot be more different. These programs are under-performing or failing as “the flavor of the month” in the vast majority of companies implementing them. Even when they are successful, in many cases the programs have proved not to be sustainable. For example, nearly every hospital in the US has one of these programs. Still, with rare exceptions, hospitals have some of the most archaic and inefficient and dangerous systems I’ve experienced in 25 years of doing systems improvement work. If you don’t believe me, don’t ask healthcare “leaders.” Most appear clueless to the conditions/systems where care is actually provided to the patient. Instead, ask the nurses. The front-lines know what is really going on while the further up the management food chain we go the less is known and the more political it becomes.

This example is not to single out healthcare. The same can be said to varying degrees for most industry segments or businesses where some sort of systems-based quality improvement program is being implemented.

Why aren’t these programs working? (more in Part II of this article)

Nobel Prize Winning Science and Conscious Capitalism

Nobel Prize Winning Science and Conscious Capitalism

I have long been a supporter of Conscious Capitalism. However, I feel Conscious Capitalism is missing a significant opportunity to both speed and deepen its implementation in businesses desirous of a more conscious approach to leadership and management and making our world a little better place.

In 1977, Ilya Prigogine won a Nobel Prize for his discovery of the Law of Dissipative Structures. This law basically showed us what happens to systems that resist change in a changing environment. Sound like any businesses, leaders or managers you know?

When a system resists change, it becomes more complex and therefore requires more energy to stay the same. However, the system can only dissipate the same amount of energy as before resisting change and therefore becomes stressed. If systems continue to resist change, the stresses build until the system goes into a state Prigogine called “reorder”—a flight into chaos only to, over time, reorder into a completely different system. Note, in reorder the new system is not a bigger version of the original system. It’s completely different. Once a system goes into reorder, nothing can stop it.

In the workplace, it turns out that stresses in systems are passed on to the people who must work in those systems as negative emotional energy. In a business that is resisting change in our rapidly changing business environment, we see two basic manifestations; 1. Stressed systems and 2. Stressed people. This is both the problem and the opportunity.

The amount of change possible in systems is proportional to the stresses on those systems. The amount of change that takes place in people (expanding mindsets and skill sets) is proportional to the emotional content of the experience. No emotion—no change!

We can use the stresses built up in legacy systems and the stresses passed on to people as a catalyst for deep and rapid change. If we are to make Conscious Capitalism sustainable, we must do both the systems work and expand the mindsets of the people. As Einstein reminds us, “We can’t solve our problems with the same level of consciousness used to create them.” The Law of Dissipative Structures is, I believe, a universal principle that we advocates of Conscious Capitalism may apply to speed and deepen the systems and paradigm shifts necessary to make Conscious Capitalism sustainable.

Can Healthcare Be Fixed? Not The Way We’re Going About It Now

20150421_151429

Fixing America’s Healthcare

Fixing American Healthcare is a big job. However, unless we understand the universal dynamics at work and apply the correct principles and tools to the job, it becomes impossible. It appears that current well-intentioned efforts to improve the healthcare system will be at best marginally successful at a subsystem level and doomed system-wide. Why is that?

We Haven’t Started With the Biggest Picture

The understanding of the big picture is critical to effective and sustainable systems work. Bucky Fuller, called the Leonardo da Vinci of the 20th century, always started with the biggest picture possible, scenario universe. In some cases, you’ll see that the discussion below started with how the universe works and then distills down to how the current healthcare system works (or doesn’t). One of the big problems I see in most efforts to fix the current healthcare system is that well-meaning people have jumped much too soon into details and pieces of the overall system before understanding the big picture. This jump into the details too soon is a sure-fire recipe for frustration, disillusionment, and even hopelessness. Let’s take a look at the big picture.

Universal Laws at WorkCan Healthcare Be Fixed? Not The Way We're Going About It Now

Ilya Prigogine won a Nobel Prize for his Law of Dissipative Structures, which describes what happens to systems that resist change in a changing environment. In short, systems that resist change in a changing environment add complexity and so require more energy inputs to fuel that complexity. However, the system can only dissipate the original amount of energy and so becomes perturbed or stressed. As the system continues to resist change, stresses build up until the system rapidly moves into a state Prigogine called reorder. Reorder starts with a move into a chaotic state and then, over time, the energy reforms into a completely different system that can handle both incoming and dissipating energy. It is important to note that the new system is not a bigger or changed version of the old system. It’s completely new.

Stresses in Systems are Passed on to People

Over 35 years of applying the Law of Dissipative Structures in our systems improvement work in many types of organizations, including healthcare, we made a startling and I believe important discovery. The stresses that build in the change-resisting systems are passed on to the people who must work in those systems. Not only that, the stresses are passed system to system and hence spread throughout the organization and on to customers (patients) and suppliers. The further one gets away from the original source of stress (a given system), the less effect. However, the stresses will be felt to some extent throughout the organization. This fact aligns with Bell’s Theorem, which tells us of the connectedness of the physical universe (systems). But the stresses don’t stop there.

As the systems stresses (physical energy) are passed on to people, the energy is transduced to fear-based thoughts that are held in the mind. Each of these thoughts has an emotional fear-based component that individuals identify in some way as stress, unhappiness, frustration and, toward the “reorder” stage, potential for burnout.

The Mind is a System, Too

The mind is a system, too. The great Bucky Fuller goes even further in stating that, “Every thought is a system.” Einstein reminds us that we can’t solve our problems with the same level of consciousness (thoughts) used to create them. We have to expand and improve our thinking. Both with physical organizational and care-delivery systems and the systems that live in the mind as thoughts, we essentially get only what the systems will deliver.

Energy Drives Change

Understanding the nature of systems and how the mind works, we soon see that the degree of change, both in physical systems and systems of the mind, is proportional to the energy present at the time of the change. In the case of physical systems, the energy is stresses. In the case of the mind, the energy is emotional energy. Look for yourself. In ALL of the instances of great changes in your life, the events are circumscribed by significant emotional content. No emotion, no change.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel for healthcare. The stresses that have been building up in the systems of healthcare can be used to speed change. Similarly, the emotional stresses that have been building in the minds of care providers can be used to speed changes in thinking and shifting paradigms. However, for the necessary changes to be sustainable in healthcare, physical systems and paradigms must be seen as an integrated whole. The transformed systems are comprised of new, low-stress systems and expanded consciousness in the form of non-fear-based systems thinking.

No Vote – Change is Coming

I’ll conclude these thoughts with a word of both warning and hope. One of the striking things about universal laws such as the Law of Dissipative Structures is that we don’t get to vote on them. There’s no vote! These and other universal principles indicate that significant changes are coming to both the existing healthcare system and the mindsets that created it and are keeping it in place in its highly stressed condition. The only question is, do we want to be proactive and take the lead in making the necessary shifts, or be dragged kicking and screaming into the new healthcare reality that is now in the beginning process of re-creating itself. For the betterment of all, I say Carpe Diem.

Ancient Wisdom and New Agreements

Creating a shift to more Conscious Leadership

By Robert N. L. Browning

Looking back I sometimes ask myself, what were the key pivotal points of significant influence in my life? The ideas that changed my trajectory to getting out of life’s harbor rather than ending up on the rocks. For me that included ancient wisdom of the Native Peoples of North and South America.

Native American friends first taught me the difference of actually “seeing” people and the world rather than just “looking”. I had a powerful experience with couple Menominee Warriors I knew who were from Wisconsin. The first time I met them, it seemed that they were able to literally “see” my mind, heart and spirit. This type of awareness and level of being present was a real game changer for me. As a result, I started feeling less separate and more connected which notably enhanced my relationships and quality of life.

In the years that followed, my studies expanded to include Toltec Wisdom. Authors such as Carlos Castaneda his first book The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge and Don Miguel Ruiz bestselling The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom had a big impact on me. I was able to apply this insightful understanding of this valuable body of knowledge to better my life and business. Over the years, I have aspired to weave this understanding into my execution as an executive leader and coach. My radar continues to be on alert for evolved transformative content of this nature.

A few months ago I discovered David Dibble, an exciting author and thought leader in advancing these powerful principles within an organization. His ground breaking program Four New Agreements for Leader and Managers is a systems-based, humanistic approach to creating sustainable growth in companies.

In addition to his notable professional success, David Dibble for eight years worked directly with don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements. In part based on this influence, David has written four books, including The New Agreements in the Workplace, and The New Agreements in Healthcare. His work details a simple and powerful evolutionary next step for leadership and management. David has proven in numerous case studies that this model creates remarkable results.

Brain bulb

The Odd Couple

Technology and Training

By Robert N. L. Browning

Have you ever wondered how seeming opposites such as Training and Technology could possibly fit together and be successfully managed from small to large B2B environments? When looking more closely at the marriage of this odd couple, metaphors abound of their unique interplay and the seeming paradox.

Technology is more empirical in nature involving hard science and engineering to invent useful things or to solve problems. It is more linear, rigid edged or Yan in nature. Training on the other hand is a process by which someone is taught the skills that are needed for a profession, job, sport or other interest. This has a softer fuzzy edge or is Yin in nature. The creative blend of these particular Yan and Yin elements are the key.

The question of effectively providing training within organizations has stumped some of today’s historic world leading publishers of Personal and Professional Development. Their early successes were in the Business to Consumer market with more direct sales and mail campaigns. With the advent of the internet and the increased dominance of video, market share was been greatly reduced and defused.

A most worthy challenge and true paradigm shift

The holy grail of how to effectively manage premier content in small to large companies had not yet been fully achieved. Systems for best accessing and managing these diverse digital assets within the organization were just not available yet. This universal problem or pain point is a most worthy challenge to solve for Success Solutions International (SSI) an emerging leader in the marketplace.

Most would agree there is much yet to understand about the human brain, behavior and accelerating learning. I have heard it said that currently the mind, human behavior and advanced training is a blend of pseudo science and art. The good news is that we are in a true paradigm shift where advances in both Technology and Training will significantly impact the business and non-profits. SSI has assembled some of the worlds leading content and technology experts to meet this challenge.

Personal growth, development, and continued learning: Why are they so important?

It is not uncommon to have people question the value of personal and professional development. In many companies driven purely by the bottom line focus and an extremely results driven culture, the value of self-improvement can be questioned and minimized.

In an online article by Don Clarke entitled “Learning and Training: Statistics and Myths” he explains why training is so important by referencing the work of Laurie Bassi, who measured how well employees are trained and developed. (Delahoussaye, et al., 2002). She writes that organizations that make large investments in people typically have lower employee turnover, which is associated with higher customer satisfaction, which in turn is a driver of profitability. A second driver is manager proficiency — good managers determine if people stay or go, and this is also influenced by training and development. She further writes that the education and training variable is the most significant predictor of an organization’s success as compared to price-to-earning ratios, price-to-book statistics, and measures of risk and volatility.

In an article by Charmin Calamaris at the Examiner.com, she sees personal growth as an ongoing process of self-discovery and crucial to achieving success. Charmin shared this quote:

“You must constantly ask yourself these questions:

Who am I around?

What are they doing to me?

What have they got me reading?

What have they got me saying?

Where do they have me going?

What do they have me thinking?

And most important, what do they have me becoming?

Then ask yourself the big question: Is that okay?

The Odd Couple of Technology and Training in their distinctive relationship can now more fully realize the potential to optimize the organization. This shift is a result of deep listening to customer needs and pain. Such is the birth place of innovation and a marriage with a bright future.

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.”

Jim Rohn: known as America’s foremost business philosopher.

Leadership and Life Mastery Who is Speaking Here

Leadership and Life Mastery

Who is Speaking Here?

By Robert N. L. Browning

Have you ever heard of observing your own mind? Did you ever ask yourself, who is speaking here? It may sound rather strange at first, yet it is one of the keys to leadership, business and self mastery.

The first audio recording to achieve the “gold record” status for the spoken word was the “The Strangest Secret” authored by Earl Nightingale in 1956. That secret is “you are what you think a bout all day long.” (1)

This higher-level developed awareness has been called the casual observer In Zen, also known as the watcher. We can actually stop to ask our own internal self talk “who is speaking here?” (2) The answer is like having a satellite that is feeding us information from outside our personal physical sphere, reducing over identification with thought.

So mind what you are thinking…

“You are what you think, so mind what you’re thinking” was addressed in a Udemy article by Tom Evans (3) Tom goes on to say “from the moment we wake up, the inner chatter of our mind starts up.” Mr. Evans also states “Such innovation and insight about our thought processes is nothing new. It has been intuited by mystics and sages down the ages. Only now are metaphysics and physics converging and swapping notes.”

How to Observe the Mind?

In a well done article at wikiHow edited by George AP, Genius knight, Teresa, Kalyx and 2 others entitled “How to Explore and Observe the Mind” the editors share 8 practical steps for exploring the mind. (4) The wikiHow article shares:

“Observing the mind is essential to be able to develop insight into the mind, as well as how to develop it to be a more cultured, wise and flexible mind. Very often however, people do not observe the mind in the correct way, which leads to complications, frustrations and conflict in the mind. The skill is all about observing in the ways that lead to a better understanding. This article looks at how to explore and observe the mind more productively, with more benefits and with fewer problems.”

The Eight Steps Include:

  1. Consider how you intend to start observing.
  2. Be sure what you intend to observe.
  3. Observe the mind carefully.
  4. Ensure you are sincere.
  5. Explore the subject, without using any analysis or thought.
  6. Write down what you observe.
  7. Continue to explore the intention.
  8. Apply what you learn in order to let go.

Being Fully Present and Mindful Makes Good Business Sense

For me being fully present and mindfulness clearly make good business sense. I once witnessed a sales presentation example that brought this point home. A sales person was struggling with a well memorized presentation and was obviously losing the husband and wife prospects. A true sales management professional observed this and stepped in. He was able to quickly turn things around the sale by being fully present to connecting with the couple and their needs.

In an article by Ed Halliwell “Making a business case for mindfulness” (5), he shares about author Michael Chaskalson’s new book The Mindful Workplace. As a mindful business specialist, Michael knows the language of the corporate world, and he persuades by making a business case for mindfulness. Far from being a hindrance to productivity, Michael shows how mindfully paying attention is crucial to it, a vital asset to the creativity, emotional intelligence and relationship-building finesse that characterizes successful enterprise. His book is a skillful weaving together of art, science and practice, presented with clarity, simplicity and warmth.” (6)

Mastery and Abundance

Beginning the journey to be more aware of ourselves and others is a vital key to manifesting greater peace and abundance. Being more conscious of our thoughts and feelings opens the door to greater self and leadership mastery.. As a result, we are better able to be in the zone of achievement and success in business and life.

“The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice there is nothing we can do to change until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds.”R.D. Laing

Exploring a Brighter Mind

By Robert N. L. Browning

How would you like to grow your mind to be even brighter?

Such as . . . a greater sense of ease, abundant expectations, moving toward enlightened goals, and that good old fashioned ‘peace which passeth all understanding’.

Are you interested in achieving even more and to be able to think clearly even at an advanced age?

This is a special time in history when business, science, consciousness and enlightenment are becoming more powerfully interwoven. A growing number of manifestos of more organizations embrace servant leadership and a committed belief in expanding a positive work environment and human potential.

With the vision of Success Solutions International (SSI) being, “Growing Organizations, Relationships and People Seamlessly”, the possibility of developing a brighter mind, is an inspiring idea. Exploring this potential with today’s thought leaders around the world is most rewarding and of great value.

The ideas and relationships on our journey of discovery over the last several years have yielded breakthroughs that enhance both personal and business transformation.

Music and Gamification Kick Start Your Brain

An excellent example of this is on a Blog Talk Radio Show produced and co-hosted by Robert N L Browing with special guest Chris Salter, founder of Music Wizard. Chris shared profound insights on “how music and gaming can make you smarter.” Chris’s company flagship product Piano Wizard Academy has achieved amazing results and numerous awards in accelerated learning by innovatively combining music and gamification.

This lead Chris to a much deeper research on the ‘power of music on the brain’, and the relatively new concept of neuroplasticity, that “the brain, when challenged, can grow new brain cells, neurons, and pathways “at any stage.”

So what the heck is Neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, asserts that the brain is not static. It has replaced the formerly held position that the brain is a fixed organ; it explores how and in which ways the brain changes and grows throughout life.

John Lieff, M.D. a foremost authority on the mind and has done extensive research on Music, Training and Neuroplasticity. For an in depth look at how, with our multi sensory brain, music harnesses powers of nature, culture, and mind, visit the Music Brain Overview Site. Dr Lief shares how much of the brain changed by the effects of music training and neuroplasticity. I find it to be fascinating that Dr. Lieff also shares on his website that recent major scientific advances have shown positive effects of yoga and meditation on physical and emotional health, including permanent changes in brain structures.

Racing Games that Grow Your Brain

A great case is made for how gamification can grow the brain in a recent article in the journal ‘Nature’, about how “Virtual Racing Fuels Aging Brains.” It looks at how “Video games can boost brainpower, advance science, and train tomorrow’s leaders.”

Brain Science and Simple Action Steps Equal More Success

Another expert in brain research I respect is John Assaraf. John is the CEO of PraxisNow, a brain-research company that creates some of the most powerful evidence-based brain retraining tools and programs in the world. On his website is an excellent article titled “Can Brain Science Really Make You Happier, Wealthier and More Successful?

Ben Ridler, CEO of Results.com ,shared at a recent webinar that he recommends, “setting only a few measurable key performance indicators”. And to stay on track, “be mindful of what is the one thing you can do right now to move toward your imperative goals”.

Simple ideas and thoughts that help make subtle trajectory changes that keep us off the rocks and out of the harbor to the ocean of potential.

We live in an exciting time to be able to bring together breakthrough technology, training, research and practice for the advancement of Brighter Brains and lives.

“A tree as big as a man’s embrace springs from a tiny sprout.”

“A tower nine stories high begins with a heap of earth.”

“A Journey of a thousand leagues start from where your feet stand.”

– Excerpt from the “Tao Teh Ching” translated by my Tai Chi Chuan master Mr. Lui.
